RE: Diesel trucks in cold, really cold, weather

Thanks everyone for your responses. If all works out, this winter will be a very interesting one for us.

Diesel trucks in cold, really cold, weather

This winter we may find ourselves working in Yellowstone National Park. We will put our 5th wheel in storage in a warmer climate and take advantage of the employee housing offered. However, we will need to use our Ford F350 diesel truck. I've heard that you have to take precautions with diesels in really cold weather. Can any of you cold-weather-experienced folks offer any suggestions? BTW, we do have a block heater, although we have never had to use it. Keep in mind, we've spent the past 14 winters in Florida.
Thanks in advance,
Cathy

RE: transporting 2 -- 14' kayaks with a 5th wheel

We fulltime in a 5th wheel and have 2 10' kayaks. We are able to carry them on the roof of the truck. We bring the kayaks forward enough so they don't interfere with the fifth wheel. I don't know if 14' would be too long, but it might be something you can look at.

RE: Problem w/ slideout moving in - Help

We once had a problem with our slide coming in. It would come in a bit and then just stop. After a second it would start up again and come all the way in. DH called the manufacturer and was told to lubricate the slide seals with silicone spray. We use a silicone spray that is put out by Yamaha (it doesn't attract dirt like WD40). DH lubricates them regularly, and we've had no trouble at all.

RE: From tent to pup to rv now back to tent

We fulltime in a 5th wheel, but we had always missed camping (fulltiming & camping are NOT the same). So last year we bought a tent, and now when the mood strikes, we can go camping. We work in Yellowstone during the summers and have thoroughly enjoyed our tent!

RE: Teddy Roosevelt National Park ND-Worth The Trip???

We visited Teddy Roosevelt NP in 2000. We truly enjoyed it. In our opinion, the badlands of ND are prettier than the ones in SD. Plus, I loved visiting a park that few people have seen. Will we go back? If it's convenient, we probably will. But I'm glad we went. If you go, be sure to see the Medora Musical. We didn't see it. After we left the park we learned how popular it is. Maybe next time.

RE: Full-timer health/medical Insurance

We are fulltimers and have a personal policy with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Florida. It is good throughout the USA.

RE: Campgrounds on NC side of GSMNP

I know of two parks near Cataloochee: Pride RV Resort and Creekwood Farm RV Park.
We've stayed in both but were in our 5th wheel, not tent camping. Both were nice parks. Check out their web pages and see if they look like something you would like. Too bad you can't stay in the park, Cataloochee has a great campground!
Beautiful part of the Smokies...have fun!
Cathy
On edit: The NPS campground in Catalooche does have flush toilets, but no showers.

RE: Campground Facilities, Great Smoky Nat'l Park

Smokemont is one of our favorite campgrounds. However, there is no camp store. Ice and firewood are available at the riding stables, and you will be just a short drive from Cherokee, NC which has grocery stores, etc. Have fun! We love the Smokies!

RE: Mailboxes at Rock Crusher Canyon / Elite Resorts

Yes, we have stayed in parks where they do not handle guests' mail. Regardless, we usually opt to receive our mail via General Delivery at a nearby post office. Never have had a problem.

We stay at Potter's Creek every time we come through that area. It's one of our favorite places to spend Thanksgiving.

RE: Full Timing For 'Foreigners'

We are Florida residents and fulltime RVers. We renew our driver's license & license plates/registration on line. Even when we lived in a "real" house, we renewed on-line, just to avoid a trip to the DMV office.
This website should help you Florida DMV Website

RE: Mail service

We use America Home Base in Pensacola for our mail, the same company that Good Sam uses. We've been with them since 2000 and have been very pleased. We pay an annual fee around $180 and then pay postage monthly. We gave them our credit card number, and they charge everything automatically. Google "American Home Base" to find their web page.

Looks like you are ready! The only item I don't see mentioned is auto insurance & fulltimer insurance. You want to make sure you have the proper coverage.

RE: Good Sam member advice on settling an estate

Another option...contact a local dealer and see if they will sell it on consignment. Usually the dealer will keep 10% of selling price and the seller gets the balance of the proceeds.
I'm sorry for your loss. My Dad passed away in June and my Mama had to sell their travel trailer. (She wouldn't use it without him.)
I wish you the best...

RE: Moving to Texas

When we became fulltimers, we considered making Texas our state of residence. However, we found health insurance rates higher in Texas, so we are Florida residents. If you buy your own health insurance, remember to check rates in all states you are considering.

RE: Fla Keys CG Update/ Curry Hammock

Please be aware that if there is a hurricane evacuation it is handled in a very organized manner. First, the officials close down all the parks, hotels, etc & send all the tourists out. Once they are out of the way, then they begin to evacuate the residents.
We lived in Marathon for about 12 years & evacuated many times. It is stressful and not fun, but it was always very organized.
Don't stay away just because it is hurricane season. Usually the water is calm & clear...perfect for diving & snorkeling!

RE: Looking for Printed Books..Work Camping.

Hello Hans,
"Complete Guide to Fulltime RVing" by Bill & Jan Moeller
We bought this book when we began to plan for fulltiming in 2000. Lots of good info on choosing a rig, stocking a rig, etc. It would make a great Christmas gift.
The book is available at amazon.com for $19.77
Good luck!
